What Is the Chinese Evergreen Plant?

Chinese evergreen plant, Aglaonema plant, also known as Chinese money tree is a great houseplant to growing in your home. It does well with low light and little water. They are easy to care for and can thrive in most homes. Read on to learn how to grow it and care for it.

How To Grow Chinese Evergreen Plant In Your Home?

Chinese evergreen plant is an excellent houseplant choice because they can tolerate low-light conditions, so you don’t need to grow lights or a lot of sunlight to maintain the plant and keep it healthy.

As long as you can find the right temperature range for this plant growing in your home, it should be relatively easy to grow them. They are not considered poisonous but may cause skin irritation if you contact the sap from this evergreen plant.

Always wear gloves when handling them, especially during transplanting procedures which can be a little tricky. This magnolia-like foliage has been popular in the tropical.

Chinese Evergreen Plant Care & Maintenance

To care for your Chinese evergreen plant, you will need to keep them in a place with bright but indirect light. The east or west-facing windows are the best for this variety of plants.

It would help if you didn’t have too much trouble getting them to grow inside as long as there are some fluorescent lights near where they live.

Chinese evergreen plants can also go into direct sunlight but be ready that they may droop if it is boiling and/or sunny where you live because many varieties cannot tolerate the heat well when placed outside during summer months.

They require moist soil all of the time, so you will need to water them every couple of days or when the top inch of soil feels dry. Washing your plants should only be done about once a month.

They should have enough circulation to keep them from getting too cold but will need some humidity in the home.

Humidity Needs for Evergreen Plants are 40-50% but do not allow the leaves to touch the water.

Chinese evergreen plants can be grown indoors throughout most North America, making it a great houseplant option year-round.

Be sure you choose a container with good drainage holes on the bottom to ensure that they won’t become waterlogged and drown.  The size of your pot will also depend on how large you would like your plant to grow. They should be planted in an 8″ pot, but a 10-12″ would be even better.

If you do not have time or energy to care for its appearance regularly, then a smaller pot would be best so that you can move it around very easily and change its location without any difficulty.

Chinese Evergreen Plant is the perfect houseplant! The Aglaonema plant needs to live in low light conditions & need little water. It is also beautiful & easy to grow in small spaces & pots with great air circulation.

Chinese Evergreen Plant is an excellent addition if you are looking for an affordable houseplant that requires minimal light maintenance. With little caring, you can enjoy your plant for many years.

Water Requirements

The water requirements are minimal, so you should only allow the top 1″ of soil to dry out before watering because they grow slowly & do not need a lot of water to survive.

Chinese Evergreen Plant Soil Requirements

Aglaonema is not fussy about soil or a potting mix. If you are using regular potting soil, then remember to keep it moist. You can use any light potting mix if you choose to repot your plant to maintain the original shape and size.

Fertilizer Requirements For The Chinese Evergreen Plant

Occasionally fertilize with a houseplant liquid fertilizer during spring & summertime when growth is at its peak. This will help sustain life for many years because they do not grow very tall or large, so the main reason for feeding them is to get new leaves and stems/canes from time to time.

Chinese evergreen plants can tolerate a temperature range of 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit, but you should avoid placing it in areas where temperatures will go below 60 degrees F.

Chinese Evergreen Plant Sun Requirements and Light Exposure Hints

This houseplant does really well indoors when it comes to sun exposure. In fact, they do not need very much at all if you are using a potting mix that is light in color. This will also help maintain a lower humidity level for them, which they really like, rather than being grown outdoors where it is much more humid, especially if you are growing them outside in the summertime.

Potting and repotting Requirements

When potting or repotting your Chinese Evergreen, make sure to use topsoil or potting mix that contains peat moss or leaf mold. You could also use coconut coir for an excellent growing medium which will help them remain moist longer and keep roots healthy.

Repotting Requirements

The best time to repot this variety of Chinese Evergreen Plant is during spring or early summer to be ready by fall for the winter months when growth slows down significantly. The soil should be slightly moist, but you do not need to water the plant as often. I like to use a fast-draining potting mix that is lightweight in color to help brighten up the Chinese Evergreen Plant because they feel more comfortable with brighter light.

Propagating Your Chinese Evergreen With Cuttings:

If you would like to propagate your own plants or create an indoor bonsai, then try this simple method to root your cuttings so that they are ready by fall when they need moderate amounts of water, fertilizer, and sunlight.

You must remember not to overwater them at all if you choose to repot them because it may cause root rot, which can lead to their overall demise! If you have root rot issues, try using diluted bleach to remove the organisms from your soil mix.

Clip a healthy tip cutting from a branch after it is at least 8″ long and insert the bottom end into the potting mix slowly, or you can dip only the end in water that has been mixed with rooting hormone powder for faster growth.

Ensure that you do not allow any of the leaves to come in contact with any sterile growing medium because this will wither them, and they may die; this is why I recommend dipping just the ends in water containing rooting hormone powder.

These plants love humidity, so you should place them near a window with good air circulation.  Place a plastic bag over the top of your Chinese Evergreen Plant, which has some holes punched in it, and place it in a warm location near some heating vents or even on top of your refrigerator.

Never use a plastic bag with any food products in it because bacteria may remain that could lead to root rot, which can kill your plant! This method will also help to maintain lower humidity levels which helps keep their foliage beautiful and healthy-looking.

Chinese Evergreen Feeding Timing

If you are feeding your plant outdoors, look at its new leaves’ color and adjust the amount of food being used as needed. If they start to turn yellow, then feed them, but if not, then don’t worry about it for now because they really do not need much at all.

They might like some added nutrition from time to time to maintain healthy growth and healthful new leaves & stems/canes along with the beautiful color!

In my humble opinion, this plant is perfect for beginners, and it can be used to make a tabletop bonsai because of its minimal training requirements. It does not require many nutrients either, so you may find that they prefer to be placed in a location where they will receive more light rather than lower amounts if the leaves start turning yellow or brown.

This means that they need less water and fertilizer at this time, but I still like to keep them lightly watered 2x per month year-round with some added plant food mixed into the soil every couple of months just in case.

Chinese Evergreen Plant Problems/pest

Some Chinese Evergreen Plant problems are not difficult to fix if you are aware of them, but there can be problems with this plant.  The most common insect problem is spider mites which may cause spotting on the leaves, and it can also kill your plant if they are not controlled quickly by dusting the plants heavily along with the soil two times per month during an infestation.

Some pests such as aphids will suck the sap out of your Chinese Evergreen Plant’s foliage which will weaken them too and cause yellow spots or brown patches to appear on top of their leaves. The best solution is to wash them with a water hose when you see these bugs appear so that they dry quickly. If this does not work, then try using some organic treatment like neem oil or insecticidal soap.

The most important thing to remember is that if the Chinese Evergreen Plant’s leaves start to droop or wither on one side that you should not water them anymore until they recover from this condition, and the less watering, the better for now.

If it continues, then it may be time to replace some of your soil because it may have become too compacted over time which can cause root rot. They also like high humidity, so place a plastic bag with holes punched in it over top of their container just above the soil line-this will help keep them healthy and beautiful during hot summer months!

Conclusion

All types of Chinese Evergreen Plants are relatively easy to care for, especially compared to other varieties, but they do need some TLC if you want them to live a long and healthy life.

They will need light from an east or west-facing window and water and some fertilizer during the growing season. If your Chinese Evergreen Plant begins to droop, then you should immediately cease watering it until its leaves perk back up again.

You can fertilize them 2x per month with a water-soluble plant food mixed at half strength in their soil or even directly into the holes of the container that they are growing in.

I hope this article helped you on your way to learning more about these beautiful plants! Above all else, be careful when handling any plant because some contain poisonous substances that may make you sick if ingested by humans! Remember, stay hydrated and safe!
